BCC is BACK!!!
After gaining the distinction of being the club that has been shut down the longest in the US due to restrictions brought about by the COVID pandemic, the board is pleased to announce that preparations are underway for the 2021-22 season and our triumphant return to curling!
The board recently met and discussed the upcoming season. We have been in contact with Idaho Ice World, and are busy securing dates and times for our club to curl. We are still ironing out the details, but we're excited by the fact that in addition to our traditional Sunday night time slot for league play, it looks as though we may be able to secure additional times to curl throughout the season.
We also have some exciting news about the new ice surface that we will be sharing in an upcoming post.
Watch this space for more updates in the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime, go ahead and dig out your curling gear, shine those shoes, make sure your brush head is in good shape, and see if you’re more successful at fitting back into your curling pants than I am, because you’re going to need them soon!

Season Cancelled
Today, we received word from Idaho Ice World that the city has determined that they will be closing until September 30, 2021. The board will discuss this development, and will keep you updated on any club business that needs to be transacted between now and next fall.
While we are sad that we will not be able to curl, we want all of you to remain safe and healthy, and hope to see you again in October when we are able to curl once more.

Winter/Spring Season Canceled
Due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), the City of Boise has closed Idaho Ice World to the public until further notice and has canceled all city programs until May 9. Our board met March 18th and decided that in light of this, we are going to cancel the current season.
We will be giving pro-rated refunds based upon the number of games your team has remaining at the stated rate of $22 per game. We will be calculating these amounts over the next few days and will begin refunding money through PayPal by next Monday, the 23rd. If you would like your refund some other way or would like to donate it to the Dedicated Ice fund, please let me know before Monday.
Once the current situation passes and Ice World reopens, we will consider a possible summer season for those who are interested. Otherwise, we expect to be back to normal operations in the fall.
If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact info@boisecurlingclub.org. Thanks for your flexibility. Good curling!

We Have Ice!
The Boise Curling Club board has been working with Idaho Ice World over the past several months, and they have now begun taking reservations for ice time on a long-term basis. We have secured the Sunday evening 5:00-7:00 block of time going forward, and the following is our tentative schedule. Of course, this is all subject to change based on the state of the pandemic and decisions by Central District Health, Ada County, and the City of Boise.
Sunday, December 6 - Drop in Curling. $22 per person. We will be testing the ice conditions and the new protocols outlined in our "Return to Curling" document (attached). This will be a chance to work out the kinks and throw some rocks for the first time in 9 months, as well as an opportunity to prepare for our Learn to Curl the following week. **Members who plan to help with the Dec 13 LTC are strongly encouraged to attend this session.
Sunday, December 13 - Learn to Curl. We will be limiting the number of participants in order to keep below the 30 person on-ice limit, and to allow for adequate social distancing. We will still need the help of 8-10 club members for this event to be successful
Sunday, December 20 & 27 - No Curling. Happy Holidays!
Sunday, January 3 - First Night of League Play. In order to adhere to social distancing and rink capacity guidelines, we will be asking for volunteers to play on teams of three. With a 30 person limit, we will need to have at least two teams of three playing each week in order to play 4 games (which allows us to pay for the ice).
Registration for both drop in curling and league play is open now!

Coronavirus Update
Update March 16: Idaho Ice World has closed to all activities, so all games are suspended at this time. The board is meeting on March 18 to determine our best course for the season. An update will be posted on the website and sent to the membership via email after that meeting.
We as a board would like to inform you of the club's current situation regarding the ongoing reaction to the coronavirus. We are following the recommendations of the state health department regarding ongoing activities, as well as following Ice World and the City of Boise's lead.
At this time, we are planning to host our regular game schedule on Sunday. A few of our board members will be going to Ice World before the games and sanitizing all of our equipment - stones, brushes, stabilizers, scoreboards, pebblers, coolers, etc.
As with everything, please take proper hygiene precautions:
Ultimately, we want you to make the decision to curl or not based on what is best for you. If you are comfortable coming out to the rink, we'll see you there. If not, we understand and support your decision.

- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- If you are sick, (have a cough, sneezing or fever) stay home.
- If you are considered higher risk by the CDC, perhaps end your playing season early.
- Avoid touching your face, in general, and specifically your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and not your hand. Dispose of that tissue.
- Always wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or more especially after wiping your nose, sneezing, couching, utilizing the bathroom and before eating.
- Trade the traditional handshake for a simple statement of “Good Curling”
- Clean and disinfect your personal brush and other equipment.
Ultimately, we want you to make the decision to curl or not based on what is best for you. If you are comfortable coming out to the rink, we'll see you there. If not, we understand and support your decision.

Fall/Winter League

IT'S a very popular meme, and it's funny because it's true. The Olympic gold medalists look like most of us. That's the draw of curling - you don't have to be a super athlete to excel in it. You just have to be able to walk on ice without falling.* If you look at those four guys and think, "I could do that", then this Learn to Curl is for you.
The Boise Curling Club is offering Learn to Curl classes September 9 from 5:00-6:45pm and 6:00-7:45pm at Idaho Ice World.
Learn to Curls feature 30-40 minutes of off-ice classroom instruction and one hour of on-ice curling. The off-ice instructional session covers rules, etiquette, and proper curling technique for delivery and sweeping. Participants then go on the ice for an hour to apply what they learned by throwing a few practice stones and playing a short game. All curling equipment is provided. Participants should wear warm, loose fitting clothing. Athletic or sweat pants, clean rubber soled shoes (such as sneakers), and a light jacket or sweatshirt are recommended.
The cost is $20 for an adult and $10 for a child under the age of 18. Choose your session below to register.
Learn to Curl Membership Fee Discount: The amount you pay for your Learn to Curl class can be used as a credit toward paying your annual membership fee - i.e., you can deduct $10 or $20 from your initial club membership.
*And practice. Lots and lots of practice. I mean, like insane amounts of practice. All Olympians, curlers included, put in thousands of hours of practice to get to where they are. You may not have to be in better physical condition than 99.9% of all humans to be an Olympic curler, but you do have to practice more than 99.9% of all humans. Let's face it, you and I are not going to the Olympics unless we buy a ticket, but we can enjoy curling for a lifetime and meet great people doing it, all while looking like an Olympic athlete.

Teaching fifth and sixth graders how to curl in Enterprise, Oregon

On Monday, February 11, 2013 Boise Curling Club members Jared Belsher and Cat Uphoff were in Enterprise, Oregon, to teach 32 fifth and sixth graders how to curl at the community's outdoor ice rink. The kids loved it! Teachers at the Joseph Charter School in Joseph, Oregon, invited the Boise Curling Club to come and teach their students how to curl as one of their snow school activities. The teachers at the rink were just as excited as the kids were about curling and a few said they were going to try to make their own set of Frankenstones so they can start curling there. (Boise Curling Club member Rob Smith has written a manual on how to make his Frankenstones. You can download the manual here.)
Outdoor curling film shown at Banff Mountain Film Festival in Boise

Fourteen club members showed up at the Egyptian Theater in downtown Boise to watch the New Zealand outdoor curling film "Gone Curling." A few club members showed up early to hand out club brochures and Learn to Curl flyers. The president of the Boise Nordic Foundation and a representative from the Banff Film Festival mentioned our club's presence, our Learn to Curl on March 28, and the Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel. They even displayed one of our curling rocks on stage (see picture at left). Before the film started, the Banff Film Festival representative made an announcement that went something like this: "New Zealand isn't the only place in the world where you can curl outdoors. On January 25, ten curling teams gathered in Stanley, Idaho, to compete in the inaugural Sawtooth Outdoor Bonspiel."
